27/09/09 HOME FIXTURE V RUMNEY U16
After the Summer break,
both teams arrived without several players from their squad for Quins’ first competitive game of the season. Both coaches
agreed on playing 14 a side.
It was the visitors who struck first. From a scrum
on the 22 m line, Rumney spread the ball right and
after some neat inter-changing between centres and wing, the ball reached
Harvey who touched down near the corner. The missed conversion gave Rumney a narrow lead which was quickly reduced when
indiscipline from the visitors gave Emyr Davies the
chance to kick an easy 3 points for the home side.
CRICC Quins were missing two key kickers from their team but Davies and the ‘Master of Illusion’ – Ieuan Atkins showed some neat footwork throughout the game.
A scrum on the Rumney 22m line gave Steff Evans
the chance to pick up and run at the defensive line. Evans handed the ball back
to the marauding Joel D’Auria who looped around the
on-rushing midfield. Ifan Roberts then entered the
attack with a clever run straight at the defence and with a neat offload from D’Auria, Roberts was able to side step three stationary
defenders to score under the posts.
Emyr Davies converted and CRICC
were ahead for the first time in the game at
10-5.
A penalty awarded against
the home side allowed Jordan Newell close the deficit but his attempt sailed wide and CRICC
reached the half time break in front.
Rumney were determined to hit back
after the break and from a quick throw-in they got CRICC unawares. Fast hands
enabled the Rumney backline to spread the ball wide.
Josh Bridson then straightened the line before
handing on to Kurtis Clark who accelerated away from
defenders to touch down under the posts.
Clark converted and Rumney edged in front at 12-10.
Both sides cancelled each
other out for long periods in the second half and as the game drew to a close,
CRICC were given a chance to win the game. A 5m scrum put huge pressure on Rumney. Quick ball from the base found Dewi
Roblin who put Josh Ward clear. Ward then fed inside
to the dynamic Ieuan Atkins who charged forward
before releasing Steff Evans for a deserved try.
CRICC led 15-12 and with
only the last few minutes left, Rumney were awarded a
final chance to share the honours with a penalty.
Newell, however, missed with his attempt and Rumney
were left frustrated after a brave effort.
FINAL SCORE: CRICC 15 -
12 RUMNEY
